My philosophy comes from the Bible, which I believe has principles Christian teachers should use in their careers as teachers. As a teacher I want to teach my students the wisdom that I have gained. In order to have wisdom a person must have knowledge. Proverbs 1:7 states that? the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.? In order to have wisdom you must have knowledge and discipline. A big part of the basis of my philosophy comes from Proverbs 1:5 which sates, ?Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance.?
What is a teacher's job? The obvious answer of that question is to teach students. The students are at school to learn, and whether the learning is social or educational, the fact is students are still in school to learn. The first part in Proverbs 1:5 describes the wise listening and adding to their learning. This proverb applies to both teacher and student. When I teach the students will be in high school and they will already have knowledge from previous experiences in the world. Some students will have a prior acquaintance with the subject I will teach as well. This proverb is for any one on any level so that they may gain more wisdom and therefore become wiser in the world.
The second part of Proverbs 1:5 is for discipline. Discernment is being able to recognize or identify as separate and distinct. High school students are making decisions about their values and opinions. If I allow a student to be disrespectful to others and me then I am not teaching them the value of respect to anyone. Important values such as respect need to be taught to students as well as the curriculum. Proverbs 1:5 clearly state that those who are discerning need guidance in order to come to the correct discernment.
As a Christian this is what I believe is the basis of principles in which to use as a Family and Consumer Science teacher. I need to gain more knowledge and teach others so that they may have more knowledge. I also need to practice discipline so that more people can learn to have better discernment of right and wrong in their lives.
